The Mind Is the First Technology
Before we taught machines to think, we forgot how strange it is that we can.
Every technology begins as an extension of a human faculty. The wheel extends the foot. The camera extends the eye. The internet extends memory. Artificial intelligence extends thought.
But extensions have a strange effect: they make us notice the thing being extended. We did not spend much time wondering about memory until we could store it outside ourselves. Now, as machines begin to mirror thought, we are being invited to look again at the instrument we arrived with.
The mind is where sensation becomes meaning, experience becomes identity, and a future is rehearsed before it is built. Attention is its most honest budget: whatever receives it becomes more detailed, emotionally charged, and likely to shape our behavior.
The future I want is not one where machines replace the difficult work of being alive. It is one where they give us back enough time and perspective to do that work with greater care. Technology should make us more human—not because humanity is perfect, but because it is the only place meaning has ever been found.
